When Camels Fly by NLB HORTON

This is a novel definitely filled with suspense and some facts. I have enjoyed readingWhen Camels Fly by NLB Horton. Had no idea I would travel so deeply into Jerusalem, Jericho, Israel, the Holy Land. That jittery feeling of what will happen next takes over the body when Grace's daughter, a hydrologist, is kidnapped. There is a constant need to follow the water. Water is being stolen by countries for their use. Water has become almost as important as oil  today. Water is a commodity that everyone wants because it's precious. As I started the novel, the rush was on for one side to stop the other side, slow the other side down to the point of wanting to kill to fulfill your desires. It's a terrorist event.

I especially enjoyed this novel by NLB Norton because there are family bonds involved.it seemed a bit funny to hear mother or daughter or son trade a joke along the most dangerous path or just getting up on a camel to start riding again. Looking away from all the danger for the moment, I would like to stay with family.

I think family is very important to NLB Horton. Maggie, the mother, wastes no time at any time protecting her daughter from those who don't have her best interests at heart. I especially like the water scene. They could have drowned. Grace  in the midst of danger never loses touch with her daughter's needs even though she strains her ankle. It's not that Maggie is helpless. She has been in the Holy Land every day killing her own snakes. Maggie is independent, intelligent and courageous.  However, Grace is the typical mother. She is an alert mother. Just in case this camel doesn't go in the direction we want, I'm here to take matters in hand.

Along the way, we pick up Mark, father and husband. Then, there is also Jeff, the son and loving brother. Each family member has the other family member's back. It's one for all and all for one. Not even precious water, terrorists, Glock guns will keep this family from surviving this thing together. Surely, there was a purpose for NLB Horton to name the mother, Grace. Grace is very much a part of this journey. It's as plentiful as manna.

I have to mention the father, Mark. Along this wicked journey, it's like Grace is meeting her husband for the first time. Has he worked for the CIA? Yes? No? Maybe? It's fun to hear Grace cross questioning this unknown man who is the father of her children and the man she loves.

With all the danger, love does rush in for Maggie. Yes, romance happens around camels. There is Matthew and Cliff. Matthew is definitely a heart throb, very good looking. Cliff has his points that count too. Maggie's first concern is stolen water, but she does see "man" when he comes around. This is the fun part.

Altogether there is a little bit of everything to make a reader fall in love with the novel. I am glad the author didn't make the water issue too technical. The information would have been over my head. I feel happy for the little bit of knowledge about the water issue picked up in When Camels Fly. I'm still not sure about sitting on a camel either. I have to applaud them. Where can you go in Jerusalem without one?

My saddest moment came near the end. I won't say a word. This is where the family really clings together for support. Now more than ever I would love to visit the Holy Land. http://nlbhorton.com/author/ Courtesy copy from NLB Horton
