Her Childhood Was Not A Fairy Tale

The Con Man's Daughter: A Story of Lies, Desperation, and Finding God by Candice Curry is a sad family's true story. Candice Curry's father is like a child himself. In his daughter's eyes, he is very, very selfish. She spends most of her life striving to conquer the bad memories of her childhood. Once she grows up she takes on the battle of her step siblings. She wants to make sure that her father does not hurt another child in this life. As she struggles through many battles in life, she learns to walk in faith. God becomes the pilot of her life, her "Blessed Assurance" and her friend.

I especially remember the courtroom battle. It is a custody battle. It takes courage to tell her personal feelings about her father to the court and support her stepmother. All the while, he is there listening at each word. He proudly acts as his own lawyer.

In the end, she must step toward forgiveness of herself and help her family forgive their past of dysfunction too. Although Candice Curry forgives everybody including a person who took advantage of her body, her father's best friend, there seems something forgotten. This is just my personal feelings. I had trouble believing that she had forgiven her dad. When she thinks of her dad, she comes across as only thinking of forgiving herself. The picture of her pain becomes uppermost in her mind. I never heard "amazing grace" was meant for him also. I did not feel it during the eulogy either. Perhaps because of different child rearing practices her sister is able to forgive him fully.

I have learned after reading the book that forgiveness is difficult, and it is one of the most precious gifts we can give another person along with forgiving our selves. Without God helping us forgiving would never happen. I wanted to remember something good about her dad. I chose his last email where he writes about his love for each child.

'"TELL MY KIDS THAT I LOVE THEM."'
'Victoria, Dad loves you.
Joshua, Dad loves you.
Ricardo, Dad loves you.
Jordan, Dad loves you.'

So often we want to do good. Sometimes we do not find the way to God in time, or for His reasons, He chooses not to send us that blinding light to open our eyes before death. This is where love matters. What's that scripture? 'Love covers a multitude of sins.' Sadly, the man did not break free in time.

I felt moved emotionally after reading how all, a big family, had left him totally alone. Obviously, he needed many prayers and a basket full of hope. Through all of these feelings, prayers, questions, Candice Curry became a wonderful mother and did not miss mentioning the miracles which took place in her life over and over again. I hope you have continued success and many blessings throughout your life. Thank you to Baker Books for a copy of the book. bakerpublishinggroup.com/books/the-con-man-s-daughter
