HOUSE OF SECRETS by TRACIE PETERSON

bethanyhouse

Bailee, Geena and Piper grew up in Washington State along with their parents. Their names are sweet and feminine. The family is not too large. Washington State or Seattle is a beautiful place in which to live. Plus, the family's physical needs are handled by a hard working father. However, this family is far from perfect. Mrs. Cooper is mentally ill. She suffers with schizophrena. This is a very serious illness because most of the time, without medications, a person lives outside of reality. For whatever reason or reasons Mrs. Cooper never believed medication could change her life for the better. She spent many hours, days, months and years thinking a serial killer wanted to kill her children. At times she thought of herself as an aide to the FBI. It is hard to grasp what conditions these sisters lived with everyday in their early lives. Even their father, usually at work, could not imagine all that was going on right beneath his nose.

"Yes, I didn't know how to deal with your mother. I didn't know how to help her--especially when she wouldn't help herself."

There is also another sibling. The secret about this child's life is too significant and tragic for me to share with any reader of this review. The neighbors had some idea that the Coopers were strange and different. They just didn't know exactly what was wrong. I think it is most hurtful when we're staring a tragedy right in the face and can't quite grasp the picture. What we see is fuzzy, dark, too light like any photograph that does not come out correctly.  I suppose schizophrenia is a little like a mirage in a dessert. A traveller thinks he sees water when really there is not any water within sight.

Bailee is the oldest child. Therefore, Mrs. Cooper blamed Bailee for anything that would go wrong. At other times she involved Bailee in her bizarre behavior.

"I crossed the yard to a building far behind the house. Inside it wasn't much warmer, but at least I was out of the wind. Momma looked frantically around the room and motioned for me to get inside an abandoned cardboard box...It was scary when she closed the lid and put something atop the box...I clutched my doll close to keep from crying."

Sadly, years go by before all of the Coopers, except for Mrs. Cooper, can come together and talk about their lives. The title HOUSE OF SECRETS is so perfect for the novel. Tracie Peterson is a master at making such a complex story so utterly real. At the same time the novel did not leave me hopeless. It is a novel proving that mirages can disappear leaving behind real, life saving waters if we put our faith in our Savior, Jesus Christ.

"Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?"

A Mighty Love by Vanessa Miller KINDLE

I don't know whether Shay's attitude is typical of a long time Christian or atypical of Christians. When Shay's friend, Malcolm, decides to give his heart to the Lord, Shay does not jump up and down with joy because a new Christian has decided to surrender his heart and soul to the Lord.

"What just happened? Did Malcolm really have a Bible in his hands? But the man has never wanted anything to do with God."

Shay is very ambitious. She wants to get a promotion on her job. She sees Malcom as a competitor. He is just another man who will prove untrustworthy. When she becomes sick, she is not able to attend a meeting at work to promote her product and a company. Malcolm, a gentleman, offers to present it for her. Shay believes he will just steal all of her well deserved credit in order to make himself look good. This is short but true portrait of Shay's character and her goal in life.

"Work on my relationship with God and my career...and leave men out of the equation."

As Shay dances back and forth in  her lack of trust for Malcom, she also finds herself becoming attracted to him. After all, he is handsome. The story is intriguing, not preachy and fun to read. It also made me think about whether I'm afraid for others to meet the Lord because of my insecurities or my lack of growth in the Christian life. In the meantime, Malcolm tells what he looks for in a woman.

"You are a beautiful woman. But I've dated plenty of beautiful women who couldn't hold my interest. It's your inner spirit that...."

By the way the Christian message that made Malcolm want to give his heart to the Lord  is titled "A Mighty Love."

The Sound of Red Returning by SUE DUFFY 1

Russia, Israel and the United States are countries involved in an intricate, fast paced espionage dance. With President Noland in the White House, the CIA, the FBI and other spies there is a dance of death going on to find a missing document which will show the name of a mole. I came to know very well a famous Classical pianist named Liesl Bower. Liesl Bower lives in Georgetown. She grew up in Charleston, South Carolina. Music is a huge part of this novel. One night Liesl witnesses the horrific murder of a College Professor. Little does she know that his secrets will lead straight to her door in the coming future. It is so ironic how life can lead an innocent person into danger. While paying a routine visit to a college office, Liesl picks up a certain music sheet by mistake. This music sheet is partly written in code. It is written only for certain eyes to see. Fast forward and SUE DUFFY took me for a hair raising ride with double agents, guns, racing cars, hide outs and murder. Suddenly Liesl is in the middle of a catastrophic whirlwind.

"When he was gone, she rounded on Liesl. "Listen to me. Your friendship with Max does not override national security. And it certainly isn't going to preempt this operation!...And, if I think you're about to jeopardize the capture of this informant, I'll have to sequester you and let other authorities decide your fate."

I began to think how quickly our roles in life can change. Liesl is use to sitting quietly before crowds in an auditorium. There is where she plays Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky and other composer's music. Music is her life. It helps her keep sad memories in the back of her mind. She has also kept GOD in the shadows of her mind.

"Determined to outdistance the voice, she had just begun to climb higher....The slashing percussion so close made her collapse into a protective ball against the steps, her hands clamped tightly over her ears. When the last note sounded, Liesl remained curled against whatever else might hurl itself at her. God, are you just a place? A Noise? Can you not hear me?"

This Christian fiction novel, The Sound of Red Returning, made me meditate on my prayer life. It is not easy to grab for Jesus while running from danger. It is so much easier to learn about His character while life is quiet and simple. Liesl soon learns this vital lesson.

"Was there a comforter that was everlasting? And she knew. The reverend was right. I can't do this alone anymore. I need you....Father!" sueduffy kregel

The Sound of Red Returning by SUE DUFFY

"Liesl was glad for the lilting Claire de Lune to follow. It was Debussy who would soothe her back to peace. Having stood to receive the adulation of her audience, she settled before the keyboard once more and began her grandmother's favorite piece....."youtube
